Can ordinary AAA batteries be used if inbuilt rechargeable goes flat ?

No, this headtorch is a completely sealed unit, which means the rechargeable battery is fully built it. It charges via USB with the cable supplied, so on extended trips without a reliable power source, a small portable power bank may be the way to go.

It looks like this particular headlamp doesn't have a red light mode, there are a few rechargeable headlamps with red lighting modes that you might want to check out that include: Ledlenser MH6 Headlamp, Black Diamond Revolt, and the Biolite Headlamp 200 - I hope that points you in the right direction Phil.
