The Petzl website seems to indicate that this will have a brightness of 600 lumen if you use a Core battery, is that correct? or does it just influence burn time?

Yes that is correct, when you use the CORE Rechargeable Battery with this Headlamp it will increase the max output to 600 lumens. The way the battery communicates with the headlamps will have a difference in output across the range of Petzl headlamps.

It's the run time, as AAA batteries have different capacities depending on the battery chemistry you choose. The Core Rechargeable battery by Petzl has more mAh than the common or more readily available AAA's, so will run longer.
