Lightweight shelter, extra shade or windbreak the OZtrail Hiker Fly is a simple shelter with a tonne of uses.
Made of durable and UV resistant UVTex fabric with a catenary cut between eyelets to ensure a tight and flap free pitch every time.
Brass eyelets feature halfway along to facilitate pole spigots and three webbing loops on each end so pitching options are aplenty.
Hi, what can you recommend for this fly that packs up no longer than hopefully 50cm and light? Need something suitable to travel with on a motorcycle. No guarantee that we will always have suitable trees to tie to on the road. Camping and hiking gear not made for those of us who love to camp out with bikes. On another note would love to see a saddle bag that opens up into a small tent for 2, straight out of the saddle bag while still attached to the the bike. Something like the way awnings are on 4x4 vehicles. New idea to play with??
I assume you are referring to poles for the fly, Ilona? We do have swag poles that come in a little longer than you'd like, these one's are 58cm - https://www.snowys.com.au/big-foot-aluminium-swag-poles. Alternatively you'd need to cut some poles to lengthor make your own with the parts we have online - https://www.snowys.com.au/tent-accessories#?type=2176.
Thanks for your suggestion of a saddle bag awning, not sure it;s somethign we are equipped to manufcture but we'll keep it in mind.
Wanted to know the eyelet size on this fly, thanks.
G'day Brendan,
The eyelet size on these Hiker Fly's is 8mm.
Hope that helps!
Hi, could this be used as a fly sheet using 4 poles for the Rv5 tent. Just looking at how to configure it.
G'day Emma,
The RV5 is 260m² over the tent body, so the Hiker fly wouldn't necessarily be a great fit, depending on your primary purpose for having a fly.
As it won't attach to the tent itself, you'd just need to make sure you've got a couple of guy ropes per pole, and potentially include some tracers to offset any instability in windy conditions. It may also be worth looking at a spreader bar to help keep the fly taught across the width of the tent, especially in rain.
Alternatively, you can find the RV5 specific fly here.
Would the OZtrail Easy Fold Tent Stretcher Bed be able to fit under this for added protection against rain? It leaks so looking for something that will work over the top.
G'day Emily,
The is just a fly or lightweight tarp sheet.
Whether or not the stretcher tent will be able to fit underneath depends on the poles you chose to use, or how high you are able to set up the tarp.
Does this have a lantern holder/strap to hold a lamp or a head torch?
G'day Marcus,
No, it doesn't have features like a tent would, it's essentially just a lightweight tarp.
You may be able to hang lanterns or head torches from whichever poles you choose to use to set this up.
Planning to add extra layer of protection to my Coleman Sundome 6p tent.. Any suggestions?
G'day Nis,
The Hiker Fly should be large enough to cover your tent depending on how you plan to pitch it, however the fly doesn't have a listed waterhead rating, so the fabric is unlikely to provide further protection to the fly cap already on your tent. The Sundome tent is designed for fair weather camping, so if you're needing something for wet weather we'd recommend having a look at tents with waterhead ratings of 1500mm or higher.
I’m wondering how well this would work in windy conditions as hubby always wants shade when we go to the beach.
G'day Hanka,
You could use the Hiker Fly as a beach shelter, however, it doesn't have a specific UV rating, so it's hard to say how much UV they'll block out. If you did chose to use it as a beach shelter you'd want to purchase sand pegs, and some poles with a wide foot plate.
I have a King swag that leaks in heavy rain. Hoping something like this would give more protection.
This would certainly help in this instance, Rebekah. As long as the dimensions are enough to cover your swag which I think it would be and you allow for it to be set up so the water can run off the fly and not pool i.e. set up with a peak, then this will certainly help.
It can also help in warm weather by casting shade over your swag if in the sun, making it more comfortable inside.
Hi has anyone used or could they be used to string up over top of hammocks?...or do you have something in store more suitable for hammock camping
G'day Tim,
The Hiker Fly could be used over a hammock, but it will take a little bit of working out your set up and trying to get it to work effectively. The Sea to Summit Hammock Tarp is a Hammock specific fly that will suit most hammock setups, so it would be worth looking at one of those too.
Would this fly fit over the Oztrail Tasman 4v tent?
G'day Heather,
The Oztrail Hiker Fly is 3.5m x 2.1m in total, so if you wanted to put it up over a Tasman 4V tent you theoretically could. The Tasman tent already has a waterproof fly so it shouldn't need a second fly, but if you did want to add one over the top of the current fly this should fit.
What is your suggestion when using adjustable poles. I know it depends your set up. But I am trying to work out if I can set up to stand in 170cm. Or would that not leave much in the sides. Also can a set of four poles be used to make an open front style, to cover a single or twin swag. thank you in advance.
G'day Noel,
You can set these up as tall as you like but obviously the taller the peak, the greater the angle of the sides and therefore the less coverage you'll have. But adjustable poles is the way to go, you could lower the poles and re-tension the guy ropes to suit. As far as lifting the front up with some extra poles goes, it could be done but the tarps don't have corner eyelets. You'd need to add some onto the reinforced corner piece yourself if you wanted to do this. The COI Leisure Eyelets & Tool Set would work fine.
Hi team, would this work well with the Darche Telescopic Alloy Pole? I am looking for a pole set that packs down well as I have a small boot. any others you would recommend. Also when are you getting this and the poles back in?
G'day George,
Yes, you can use the Darche Telescopic Alloy Poles with the Oztrail Hiker Fly. They are due back in mid-December, so we should see them in a week or so. The Supa Peg Big Foot Aluminium Poles are also popular.
can you do a video of how you manage to set this up on your own?
G'day Jade,
I'll pass this request on to our videographer for you, no promises but we'll see what we can do. It sounds perfect because there's normally only one of us free to shoot the videos!
I intend to replace the pegs with better, lighter pegs.
G'day Tim,
We're currently out of stock of the OZtrail Hiker Fly, so I gave OZtrail a buzz to see if they could help me out. Murphy's Law, they're also out of stock but they did say that at an estimate, the pegs would weigh around the 100g mark. Sorry that I couldn't be any more detailed than that.
G'day William,
It's a great idea to use the Oztrail Hiker Fly over the top of your Malamoo Tent. It will add some extra protection from the sun and rain for you.
Would this be suitable to use over the OZtrail festival 2 tent. If so which poles would you recommend? Thanks
G'day Beate,
You'll have no issues at all using the Oztrail Hiker Fly over the top of your Oztrail Festival 2 Tent. As for which poles you should use. I would probably recommend you go for the Oztent Alloy Poles.
this might be a stupid question but... my tarp came with a guy line like right in the middle of the fly on the outside. so smack bang in the middle of your two poles. where are you supposed to attach this to? only thing i can think of would be like up over a tree branch or something?
G'day Kieran,
Not a stupid question at all mate! You're bang on the money too, the Oztrail Hiker Fly tends to sag in the middle a little, so the guy rope in the middle can be used to hang over a branch or similar to keep it from sagging.
Hi there, im looking at getting a black wolf ul mantis; could this double as a ground sheet? Thanks Glen
G'day Glen,Â
You could use the Oztrail Hiker Fly as a lightweight groundsheet, as it will provide a bit of moisture protection and would be a good option if you need to keep the weight down in your pack.Â
Just bear in mind that it's not going to be as effective as a heavy duty plastic or mesh, so you might want to be extra careful when clearing the ground under your tent from any debris.Â
Hi there, does the specified weight include guy lines and pegs (i.e. full weight required to use the fly)? Thanks.
Hi again... what poles do you have that are suitable for packing into a 50l+ backpack for trekking... thanks.
Hi, can you recommend which poles to buy with this? Thanks
Do you have this item in stock, and what distance are the eyelets apart, thank you.
