What’s So Great About a Hammock?
1. Fresh Air
You’re not cramped inside a tiny hiking tent or stuffy camping shelter. Instead, you’re experiencing the freedom of fresh air and falling asleep beneath the twinkling stars.
2. A Streamlined Sleep Setup
Your gear is simplified with a hammock involved, as you can pack a lighter sleeping mat for a layer of insulation or forego one altogether if the weather is warm.
3. Less Maintenance
No poles, no pegs, and no hassle – so less can go wrong when you’re out in the field! Plus, you won’t have to keep any spare parts on hand.

4. Environmental Impact
Instead of a tent – which needs to be pitched into the ground using pegs and a groundsheet – a hammock won’t leave as much of an impact on your chosen campsite. This is provided you set up using tree protectors.
5. Improved Sleep
There have also been studies conducted by French and Swiss scientists on the rocking motions of a hammock, and how this can both help send you to sleep sooner and improve the quality of your sleep.

I bought camping hammock and it is very sturdy, easy to use, very comfy and easy to wash and dry. Also the size is big. Highly recommended. OnewindOutdoors“
Thanks for the insight, Ashley!
I have spent many nights all year round in my Hennessy hammock. It is awesome – but you do need something to insulate you from the air below as Travis said. What I use is a silver sided sunshield like you use in a car. It reflects the heat from your body back and works really well.
A silver sided sunshield is a brilliant idea Cam. Thanks for that tip!
The only issue I find with the article is the ditching the sleeping pad. Like an air mattress sleeping in a hammock leaves your underside exposed to what the air temperature is. When you lay in your sleeping bag you compress the loft under you and get cold in any season but summer and even then you will get cold in the night. While you cannot ditch the sleeping pad altogether you can use a much lighter pad than you would while sleeping on the ground because you’re only insulating not cushioning.
I will agree that I have never slept better than in a hammock and do a lot during the summer months and into the fall instead of in my bed. During thru hikes only carrying the hammock a rain fly for it with a 3 quarter length therma rest ridge rest sleeping pad made coupled with my sleeping bag made for an incredible lightweight experience. Remember not to hang it too tight and fall into the trap some people do trying to make it bed like. The looser the hang the better the sleep.
Thanks for your feedback Travis, you have an excellent point re: insulation so we’ve updated the article accordingly – cheers!
Sleeping in hammocks is great but you need insulation like your sleep pad partly inflated or you will get cold in the early hours.
Thankyou…great info ?
