For the lone wolf who likes to explore off the beaten track, the Mantis UL 1 Hiking Tent by BlackWolf is a low-profile, easy-to-use hiking and backpacking tent that shelters from all kinds of conditions.
Lightweight, pack-friendly, and ready for adventure - the Mantis has a low-profile structure which helps keep your shelter steady in unideal conditions. For protection against rain, the nylon fly has a
For a reliable, low-profile tent after a rugged day on the track, you can’t go past the BlackWolf Mantis Ultralight 1 Hiking Tent.
Hi I am heading to overland track in March next year. Is this tent suitable for the hike? Thanks
G'day Martin,
These tunnel style tents are not ideal as they need to be fully pegged out in order to be set up - they're not freestanding.
Most of the campsites on the Overland Track are platforms, which can make it challenging to set up non-freestanding shelters. It's not impossible, but does mean it's a less straightforward process, so may need to be something you consider.
The only true freestanding option we have in our range in the 1P size, is the MSR Hubba Hubba. All the others need to be pegged out.
What size sleeping mat can fit in this tent? I have a S2S SI large rectangular mat that is 201L x 64W cm, will that fit? What other 1p tents could you recommend, i was also looking at the Zemphire Atom but i think my mat is too large.
G'day Joel,
We've had a question before about the internal dimensions and mattress fitment, so ultimately the majority of the functional sleeping space ranges between 75-110cm wide.
Even if the length of your mat touches the sides of the tent a touch at either end, this wouldn't be a problem. The bucket flooring of the Matis is quite high and I doubt the tent inner would be pushed out to touch the fly.
With regards to the Atom, thats ultimately 90cm wide the whole way. The mattress Ben uses in the features video is 55cm wide, so that gives you a visual on available space.
Hope that helps!
Hi there, what's this tent like for condensation and breathability? I have a bivvy tent that is shocking for build up of condensation and i wakeup often wet as from it. What would be the best lightweight tent that is fairly useable in SA for most seasons. Cheers
G'day Andy,
The Mantis UL I Hiking Tent has large mesh panels on the tent inner, and a good size gap between the inner and outer tent, so it will have much better breathability and less condensation than a bivvy.
There are a few lightweight 1P Hiking Tents available, so what is "the best" will vary based on the features you're looking for. You can find all of the options here.
Hi, I'm wondering if you can pitch the fly first and then the inner, or both together to avoid the inner getting soaked during pitching in rainy conditions? Thanks!
G'day Fiona,
The Black Wolf Mantis UL is not a fast pitch or multi-pitch tent, meaning the tent inner creates the physical structure of the tent setup. The fly cannot be set up on its own.
There are some of these options available, but they often have little to no ventilation or are designed for Alpine/above snow conditions.
Check out the Vango Nevis 100 as an alternative.
Hi, I’m keen to do some bike packing & hope to fit the tent either on my rear rack or strapped to the handle bars. Thanks in advance ðŸ‘
G'day Kevin,
I've just measured the length of the poles in the Mantis UL1 - they are 38cm long.
What is the width down near thee feet. Wanting to work out of my existing Black Wolf self inflating mat will fit.
G'day Amanda,
I've measured the tent to be 40cm at the very end and 75 cms where the zips stop.
G'day, just wondering if you could please confirm the weight of the tent? You have it at 1.4kg, but the Black Wolf ( https://www.blackwolf.com.au/store/activity/hiking-and-trekking-activity/mantis-ul-1-adventure-tent/ ) site has it at 1.6kg . Thank you
G'day Sven,
We've just checked this out and have adjusted the weight on this one to mirror the Black Wolf specifications.
If used without the fly, is this tent able to be used without pegs? I will be needing to erect on a platform with no tiedown points or holes for pegs etc. If not can you recommend a 1 person tent or bivy that can?
G'day Craig,
You won't be able to use the Mantis UL I freestanding, unfortunately, but your best option for a one person freestanding hiking tent would be the Tungsten 1P (which is probably the best all-rounder, the Tungsten UL 1 or the Hubba NX from MSR (which is on the pricey side). I hope this was helpful
What is the combined weight of the two poles?
G'day Michael,
I just weighed the two poles of the Black Wolf Mantis UL I Hiking Tent for you. Together, they weighed 266g. Keep in mind that it might be a few grams lighter as the poles did still have the rubber bands on them to keep them together.
I am 183cm tall and it looks like the ends of the tent taper down. Would I be able to lie down without my head and feet pushing against the fly and getting wet when it rains?
G'day Dave,
I've just had a quick look at the Black Wolf Mantis UL I Hiking Tent on our shop floor and I reckon that whilst it will be a bit tight, you should be able to lay down in the tent without your feet or head touching the ends.
Would I be able to store a 55L backpack and some boots in the side area of this tent under the vestibule? I get the impression that there isn't enough room to store gear inside the tent so my major concern is having a place to store my gear out of the rain/dew...
G'day Jay,
You will fit a 55L backpack in the vestible, however it will probably touch up against the fly sheet so it might be a good idea to leave the rain cover on the pack just to give it a bit of extra protection in wet conditions. Your boots will fit off to one side no worries.
Hi there, I have heard of issues with sagging near the foot of the tent in earlier models of the Mantis, regardless of how well you pitch it. How is this model different in that way? Thanks 😀
Hi Freya,
I'm not sure if the reviews you've read relate to older versions of this tent or not but the foot of the tent has a pole section to keep the inner erect however if this is not fully guyed out it may not achieve its optimal height, which is actually quite low, therefore this might be an issue if you are a taller person or have long feet and sleep on your back.
As we haven't had any feedback in relation to this I can't specifically comment as the tents in store seem to be fine however, from the reviews I've read, it seems that to avoid any problems the optimal height for someone using this tent is 170cm.
Does the foot end have a pole too? What is stopping it from sagging onto your feet?
G'day Jen,
I can see where you would be concerned as if the inner was touching your feet - there'd be a lot of annoying condensation!
Yes there is definitely a pole at the end of this tent to keep the inner elevated off your feet (I double checked with the display model).
You can get a good idea of what this looks like in the second image linked on the product page, which shows the Mantis UL I without the fly on.
Is it possible to sit up in this tent? for changing?
G'day Sooz,Â
The maximum internal height of the Mantis UL I Hiking Tent from Black Wolf is 70cm. I'm 5"6 and I wouldn't be able to sit up inside comfortably. You may be able to depending on your height - but it is quite a cosy tent, so it's probably not optimised for getting changed in. Â
The old model had a door on each side but this new model only specifies one door. Is the other side mesh or solid material?
G'day Matt,Â
I've given Black Wolf a call and they've confirmed that the door on this tent is mesh, and the other side has a mesh panel at the top, with a solid panel at the bottom.Â

Do the mantis come with light pegs? Or would I be better off buying some sea to summit ground control pegs? I am trying to go ultralight but not ultra expensive.
The pegs are regular 'hook' style pegs, but they are lightweight alloy, I tried to attach a photo for you but we are having upload issues in our store at the moment sorry. The ground control pegs will be stronger and more packable, but not necessarily lighter.
