More than just your average sleeping bag, the answer to a good night’s sleep for campers or houseguests is the Outback Comforter Queen Sleeping Bag from OZtrail.
Stitched to the underside are valance pockets that fit around the top and bottom ends of your queen-sized mattress. It’s cosy and comfortable with soft-touch flannel lining and a pure cotton outer shell. Hop inside and sandwich yourself between two layers of 150gsm ExoTherm Xr hollow tubular fibre fill that trap and retain the warm air, providing superior insulation. The layers have been offset to prevent cold spots at the quilt sewing lines, ensuring even warmth throughout. There is a velcro closure at the top of the bag so you can keep the bag around you while adjusting the zip for a little temperature control.
Add a mattress and pillows, and OZtrail’s Outback Comforter Queen Sleeping Bag has your camp bedding sorted with its valance pockets and all-in-one design.
We have the Oztrail Queen Comforter which has been amazing at keeping us warm even during near 0 temps. The problem we have is that despite being a queen size it is a little too small on the sides for our mattress (195 x 150 x 12). Is there something similar but bigger/wider? Thanks.
G'day John,
Unfortunately not - the 'Queen' size in camping gear isn't necessarily equivalent to domestic bedding sizes.
The double sleeping bags in our range mostly max out around 140cm wide, so this Outback Comforter and similar style sleeping bags at 150ish cm are the largest on the market.
The only option I could really think of is if you went with 2 large hoodless sleeping bags like the Coleman Pilbara for eg. and sandwiched them together to make a 200cm wide double. Of course in this situation you wouldn't have the skirt feature which attaches the bottom bag to the mattress, but I guess it would depend on whats important. If the extra width is worth not having the attachment, or vice versa.
Hope that helps.
Can you recommend a similar bag for double high mattresses? Ideally something made from cotton like this one.
G'day Erik,
There's no bag on the market, as far as we're aware, that will attach to a double-high mattress.
Obviously you can use any double sleeping bag on a double-sized mattress, but in terms of actually fitting to the mattress, I'm not sure you'd be able to find one.
Hi all, I have one of these I purchased from you a while back, it's great! I'm thinking of unzipping it and putting the top and bottom layer in seperate compression sacks so it takes up less room in my car. What size compression sack would you recommend to fit one half in? Thanks heaps! Phil
G'day Phillip,
We'd probably suggest going with the XL size compression sack to be on the safe side. These have a max capacity of 30L, with compression down to 10L size.
Hope that helps!
is this sleeping bag machine washable
G'day David,
While it's easy to find information on the web explaining how to machine wash your sleeping bag, it isn't recommended and you'd need a laundromat sized front-loader. It can be done - but the manufacturers care instructions are 'hand wash only'. Just give it a swish in a laundry tub with some mild detergent, rinse and rinse again, then lay flat in the shade to dry. We want your sleeping bag to last a long time - so wash it the old school way. Plus, a hand wash is likely quicker and cheaper than a trip to the laundromat.
I really like the sounds of, and all the great reviews for this sleeping bag. I'm looking for one to go with the new Coleman double high air mattress I'm awaiting on delivery of. I notice you've previously answered someone else's question regarding the valance not fit for this mattress. Could this sleeping bag still be used comfortably with the valance bit just left lying underneath ..... or would it need to be removed altogether for best comfort?
G'day Donna,
The valance bit is just four light cotton corner pouches that are designed to tuck under a standard height mattress. I can't see any reason why you couldn't use this sleeping bag without the valances in place, it wont add any bulk or discomfort at all.
My airbed has 22cm thickness so will the tailored valance pocket be fited?
G'day Rungaroon,
Yes, this will fit a 22cm airbed with no worries. The mattress Lauren uses in the video is 20cm thick, so an extra 2cm won't cause any troubles.
Am wondering if the bag comes with (or sold separately) removable lining?
G'day Dianne,
No, the Outback Comforter doesn't come with a removable liner. You can find all of our liners in our sleeping accessories category.
Will the pockets fit securely to the Coleman double height air mattress ?
G'day Karen,
No, the pockets are only designed to fit a single high air mattress, so they won't suit the Coleman double high mattress.
Would the sleeves do much to hold the sleeping bag to a 10cm Camp mat? Or would they fit too loosely?
G'day Oli,
The foot-end sleeve will do a fairly good job or keeping the comforter attached to a 10cm camp mat, however, the head end generally won't hold too well on a 10cm mat.
