Imagine this… you’ve been on the road all day and the sun is setting as you pull into camp. You pitch the tent, grab your chair and pour yourself a drink. Then you pull some mini pizza’s, crispy base and all, from your Travel Buddy Portable 12V Marine Oven in the back of your vehicle!
Sounds pretty good right? Well with these handy little 12V ovens the idea of oven-baked food being cooked whilst in transit is a reality. Don't be fooled by its name, this oven is as handy on the boat as it is on the road. Powered from your car’s 12V cigarette socket, the Marine model just offers more space and a bit more heat than its smaller counterpart.
Mounted or free-standing, the Travel Buddy Portable Marine Oven has two shelves and enough width for small pizzas, pies for the whole family or a decent sized lump of meals with some warm crusty bread, the possibilities are endless!
Campers, caravan tourers and tradespeople will find this handy little oven a priceless addition to their setup, and truck drivers may appreciate being able to heat up healthy home-cooked meals rather than surviving on greasy truck-stop grub.
Hello I used to own one of these in my vehicle and it was great. My question is, can I buy one and use it indoor? Is there a way to connect it to home power?
G'day,
Travel Buddy only runs on 12v power, so you would need a AC to DC transformer of reasonable quality. These are most readily available from somewhere like Jaycar, which have loads or stores around Australia so you should be able to find one nearby.
Can you mount the Travel Buddy in the tray of a ute?
G'day Kate,
The Travel Buddy needs to be mounted undercover and out of the weather. If you don't have a cab or at least a canopy over your ute tray, it wouldn't be recommended that you mount it there.
With only a single directional mounting available (at the bottom), is there or would there be issue in mounting this upside down to be able to mount from the roof of my canopy?
G'day Alex,
Yep, there would be an issue, sorry! The location of internal elements, etc means the heating distribution would change it you run the oven upside down.
Heaps of people mount these ovens from the roof of their canopy, a simple DIY bracket or two, made from a strip of stainless or similar from your local hardware should do the trick.
Otherwise, there's a range of aftermarket bracket options out there that may be a better option for you.
Can any of these be used as a toaster? Or option? Have solar, lithion ion battery and a 1500w inverter in my campervan.
G'day Sharyn,
No, the Travel Buddy 12v ovens (or any of the portable 12v ovens) are not suitable for toasting foods. Ideally, you'll need a suitable flame like the grill under a stove, or a stove top toaster for better efficiency.
Hi do you guys sell the Anderson plug that will go with this unit?
G'day Kacey,
The Travel Buddy comes with a 12v cig/merit plug cable, but if you want to change it to an Anderson terminal, you will need to do that yourself. You can find the Anderson terminal here, however, if you're not 100% sure what you're doing, best to take it to an auto electrician or 12v electrician. It's a quick and easy job.
Hi Does the exterior get hot when in use? I’m wanting to mount this against the ceiling of the canopy of my Ute. Which is painted mild steel sheet? Cheers Lindsay
G'day Macca,
The external walls of the Marine Oven are insulated, so they can be mounted up against the ceiling or sidewall of your ute canopy. The front door isn't insulated so it can get a little warm, so just make sure the door isn't directly against anything that will melt.
Travel Buddy 12V Portable Marine Oven
G'day Rod,
The internal dimensions of the 12V Marine Oven are 26.5W x 25D x 10H cm.
How much power does this consume if eg cooking some frozen pies at 180 degrees (day 40 mins(? I’m interested in the stats.
G'day Miranda,
The 12V Portable Marine Oven draws 10 Amps per hour, so if you're driving this won't cause any issues, but if you're stationary you'll want to keep an eye on the power consumption so you don't flatten your battery.
Can we get the travel oven buddy with the door opening the other way?
G'day Adrian,
The Travel Buddy 12V Portable Marine Oven only comes with the door opening in one direction. If you're after a custom door orientation we'd suggest getting in touch with Travel Buddy direct to see if they can make you one.
Hi does the stove need an area around it where it is mounted to prevent heat transfer? Or is the outside case insulated so that it can be mounted in a 4 WD up against the fridge etc? Also is it ok to change the cigarette plug for an Anderson one? Thanks
G'day Karl,
I've just spoken with the team at Travel Buddy and they said it's fine to mount the Marine Oven up against a fridge or side of the car etc. They have indicated that the front door does get a little hot though so just make sure there is some clearance there. It is also fine to change the cigarette plug over to an Anderson plug.
Travel Buddy portable marine oven
G'day Gina,
These do come with a 12V plug for use in a cigarette lighter socket, but Travel Buddy recommend hardwiring where possible due to the power draw on this unit. Doing this does not void your warranty. Basically, the female plug fittings in vehicles can be a bit loose causing the plug to overheat.
Definitely recommend to use an Anderson connection. My cig plug melted on first use :)
Could you cook small roasts in this?
G'day Tim,
Theoretically, you could put a small roast in the Travel Buddy 12V Portable Marine Oven as it heats to 190'C, it may take a significant period of time to cook though.
I've seen installations where there is a bracket that hooks into the locating holes on the side of the oven to screw it down.
Yep, they are included with the stove, Jarrod.
Hi How much room do you need to open the door Thanks
G'day Phill,
Armed with my trusty tape measure, I set out on my noble quest to find the length of the door on the Travel Buddy 12V Portable Marine Oven for you. But, alas, my noble quest was thwarted before it could even begin. We're currently out of stock I'm sorry to say. Not to be deterred, however, I popped open one of the smaller ovens to get some idea of what we could be looking at. The door gives about 15mm clearance on either side of the smaller one & the design of the large is very similar. Given that the scale of the two ovens are fairly similar, I'd say that you'd be needing about 28-29cm of clearance for the door. More than happy to follow this up for you when we've got stock again if that's of any benefit to you.
