Waking up at the crack of dawn isn't always ideal, especially when you plan to relax on a weekend away. Not a fan of invasive sunlight on your lazy mornings? Coleman have you covered. Their Instant Up 6P Lighted Northstar Dark Room has a special coating on the rainfly which blocks out 95% of light and reduces the heat in your tent by up to 5°.
Setting up this tent is easy - simply lay the tent down, spread the fabric out, extend the poles until they lock into place, then throw the fly over, peg it out - and you’re ready to go! The interior features a flexible silicone LED lighting strip, which provides convenient illumination at the flick of a switch. Buy yours here The front features a vestibule which helps add to your living space, and you can also pitch out the two-pole awning for extra shade, plus there's a second door at the rear that can be extended as an awning. You won’t lose your essentials amongst the rest of your gear as the Instant Up Dark Room Tent features interior organisers and a storage hammock.
This tent features a durable polyoxford PVC floor for toughness, a 3000mm waterhead rated fly to keep off drizzle and has ventilation covered thanks to the ultrafine mesh and the Coleman Circle Ventilation system. The best feature by far though, is that you can put the kids to bed early and have them out like a light, thanks to the dark interior. Enjoy peace and quiet at night and longer sleep-ins with some help from the Instant Up 6P Lighted Northstar Dark Room tent from Coleman.
Does the tent come with all the pegs needed?
G'day Stacey,
Yes this tent does come with all of the pegs needed to set this up. You can also get some stronger pegs I recommend the Supa Peg Key−Head Galvanized Steel Tent Peg 6.3mm x 225 mm they are stronger and the key head shape makes them easier to get in the ground! You will need at least 20-24 pegs for the tent including the guy ropes.
I am comparing northstar with lumos , just curious about the vestibule size. Saw your previous reply about lumos floor length is 80cm , what about northstar? 130cm is the floor size or including the angle of tent roof ? you can please confirm
G'day Chris,
The Coleman Northstar vestibule is a little bit longer at 130cm long, this measurement is from the tent straight to the side vestibule where it is pegged down, the slight angle of the walls isn't taken into account. The front vestibule area would be slightly larger with the Northstar.
As above, can your extend the small vestibule using any of the Coleman gold series awning extension pieces?
G'day Jim,
At the moment there are no other accessories available for the Northstar Lighted Tent range. The Northstar range has no zipper to be able to attach the awning extension so this won't work.
The only Coleman tents that have optional awning accessories are the Silver & Gold EVO series.
We are weighing up this tent with the OzTrail 6p fast frame blockout. Wondering about how the Coleman ultra fine mesh compares with the OzTrail No-See-Um mesh for sandflies or midges?
G'day Andrew,
The Coleman Instant Up Tents have an ultra-fine mesh and this won't keep the bugs from getting in, the No-See-Um Mesh is the only mesh that is fine enough to keep sandflies and midges out, so the OZtrail Fast Frame Mesh will be better at keeping the bugs at bay.
Hi, We (1st-time campers) recently brought the Coleman Instant Up 6P Light Northstart Tent from Snowys; which camper fly or what size of the tarps will fit this tent? Thanks!
G'day JJ,
I'm not 100% clear on what you're needing sorry, so I've got a few questions to make sure you get the best info.
Are you looking for a tarp to use under the tent floor like a groundsheet, a tarp to use over the top of the tent for additional weather protection, or something extra to use as an awning/gazebo shelter style thing out the front of your tent?
What are the main difference between Coleman and the blackwolf? I'm look for a tent used in harsh desert conditions with lots of wind. Which one would be more suitable?
G'day Thin,
The Blackwolf Turbo 300 is designed as a rugged touring tent. It has a super strong and thick aluminum frame, including all connectors and knuckles, and is made from durable ripstop canvas.
The Coleman instant up tents are a great option, but they're aimed at entry level campers who will do more weekend style, fair-weather family getaways. They're ultimately not designed for touring or harsh conditions.
Hope that helps.
Hi, got this tent and used it over the weekend (which was a little wet). Worked great - quick and easy to set up and back away and kept us dry. However, now that I'm home and and need to dry it out I've come across some challenges. As the poles are attached to the tent, what's your recommended method of drying the underside of the tent? It's pretty challenging to flip it over with poles attached and feels like I'm going to snap a pole in the process. It also looks like a real pain to detach and reattach the poles from the tent. Any tips would be appreciated.
G'day Brad,
The floor of the tent can just be dried when you are packing it up. A couple of old towels or rags to dry off any wet patches as you fold them over is the best trick.
Keep a broom or dustpan brush on hand to get rid of any dirt or debris as well. If the tent floor is super wet, it can take a bit of time, but its the best way to go about it.
Is there a Coleman gazebo that might be compatible with this tent ?
The awning does have a velcro strip that is designed to attach to the underside of gazebo awnings, Jane., most gazebo's have patches to which the side walls can be attached, and they can be used to attach the tent awning in this case.
How do these 2 tents compare in quality - I’m not too particular about dark room option more about build & durability - price not an option
They are pretty much on par with each other, Gene, it's hard to recommend one over the other. The Instant Up tents have been around for longer and have built more of a reputation, but that's really the only thing splitting htem. I'd recommend choosing based on features or price.
What are the advantages of going a Northstar over just a standard Coleman instant up? Is it a better grade material?
G'day Doug,
No difference in material or build quality. The only difference is the Northstar tents have an extra internal coating to block out light. As a result of that, they have internal lighting systems, and a slightly larger vestibule area to try and reduce external light through the doorway. If you don't mind waking up with the sun & already have your own camping lighting, there's no real advantage.
Hope that helps.
Enjoying this 6p instant up lighted tent bought from Snowy’s via Amazon. The vestibule is great. Are there additional accessories to possibly cover the right & left hand side of the vestibule, similar to the silver series?
G'day Pandji,
Glad to hear you are enjoying your tent!
Unfortunately, there are no further accessories available for the Northstar Lighted Tent range.
The only Coleman tents that have optional awning accessories are the Silver & Gold EVO series.
Does the tent come with a room divider wall to enable one to divide the room into two?
G'day Rod,
No, the 6P Lighted Northstar doesn't come with a room divider, or a way to divide this tent. If you're looking for something that is divided into two rooms, we'd recommend checking out the 8P Lighted Northstar Tent.
Any tips on preventing rain pooling on the awning?
G'day Moustapha,
During wet weather, we'd recommend zipping the front awning shut to enclose the vestibule space. Securing all of the guy ropes, to ensure the fabric is nice and taught, will also reduce the chance of water pooling.
Does the heavy duty carry bag waterproof?
G'day Feri,
No, the bag for the tent is not waterproof.
Is the Coleman Instant Up Silver Series Evo Shade Awning compatible with this tent?
G'day Pete,
Unfortunately not, the Evo Shade Awnings are only compatible with the Evo series tents, as they have a zipper to attach the awning to.
Hello, is the PVC coating or material on the inside, outside (or or both?). Thanks :)
G'day John,
It's not a PVC coating, the flooring material is actually full heavy-duty PVC vinyl, which is a fabric in and of itself.
Hope that helps!
Are the guy ropes stitched into / attached to the fly? Or is it possible to remove them and use higher quality ones ?
G'day Shan,
The guy ropes are tied through webbing loops, so absolutely ok to remove them and upgrade!
Do you think a 6 person is too big for 2 persons. when we go camping we want plenty of room for moving around especially if wet want to sit in tent and read or other things. Or 4 person enough room. Will probably using 2 single beds most times.
G'day Ian,
The 6 person tent might be a little on the extra spacious size for two people, but if you like your space, and camp when it is wet, it should give you room to stay in the tent during the day. The 4 people will also be large enough, however, it won't give you as much space to recreate in the tent if the weather is poor. It's up to you, but either option should suffice.
We use it for two people and find it to be ‘just right’. We have a queen stretcher bed. I felt the 4p would be too small - I think the 6p is great for 2!
Hi, I really like the look and idea of this tent, but with windows/door open is there adequate lighting in there for kids to hang out without use of the roof light during the day(eg for a game of cards)..or is it it too dark?
G'day Claire,
It would depend on how bright and clear the day is I'd say.
Check out our Features video with Ben, you can find this on the product page, at around the 4:30 minute mark you'll get a really good idea of what the tents like in the situation you're describing.
Hope that helps.
What is the size of the pocket for storing the power pack, so that I can make sure I do not buy one too large? What connection type is the USB that goes into the charging unit, a USB-A, B or C?
G'day Suzy,
We don't have one of these tents on display, but can confirm Bens hand firts easily in the pocket (as per the video) and his hand measures 12cm wide by 19cm long.
I'm not aware of any USB portable power pack that is larger than this, so you'll be absolutely fine.
In terms of the input, it's just a normal USB. You can see this at around the 7:00min mark on the features video.
Hope that helps.
Hi, do you sell the USB Power pack that I would use in this tent? If I was to buy elsewhere, what exactly am I looking for specifications-wise?
G'day Suzy,
There's no specific USB power pack for these tents, any brand or size will do the trick.
These lights use roughly 1Ah, so 1000mAh is small power pack talk.
If you're looking at a 10,000mAh pack, that will run the lights for around 10hrs as an example.
You can find our range of portable powerpacks here, they're all great options, whichever one you go with will come down to size (as above) and personal preference.
Is it ok to use this tent in Winter with 0 or -2 degrees?
G'day Ron,
Tents don't come with a warmth or insulation rating at all, so you can use any tent in any conditions really.
The Coleman Northstar Darkroom series tents have a fabric inner, so compared to fully mesh inners, it's a good option.
The main issue that will probably come up is condensation, which is unavoidable, but there is some important considerations with dealing with it...we've covered this in a podcast if you need more info, HERE.
It's essentially your sleeping system gear that you'd need to focus on when looking at camping in those kinds of temperatures, so just make sure you're covered on that front aswell!
Just wondering if you could fit one or two of the oztrail bunks in the tent?
G'day Sarah,
You can fit two of the Oztrail Deluxe Double Bunks in the 6P Lighted Northstar, however you'd need to set them up toward the centre of the tent next to each other, and then each person could access their bunk from the outside edge.
Are the fly screens midgie proof
G'day Ian,
The mesh on the Northstar Darkroom Tents isn't No-See-Um mesh, so, unfortunately, they're not classed as being midge proof.
Hi, I am thinking to buy Northstar or Lumos, could you please tell me their differences? I compared their specs and noticed Northstar’s material is 75D polyester while Lumos is 150D, does that mean Lumos is better than Northstar? Thanks.
G'day Veronica,
Overall these two tents are very similar with a few minor difference to the fabric and the lighting systems. In terms of fabric differences, you're somewhat right, the Lumos is 150D, while the Northstar is 75D, however, the Northstar is 185T, which is the thread count, so although the Coleman fabric isn't as thick, it is denser. Oztrail doesn't list the thread count for their fabric, but overall we're fairly convinced the two fabrics are very similar overall once you account for the denier and thread count. Personally, we think the Coleman has a slight edge, mainly because they've been on the market longer, and have built a reputation for reliability.
hey there - do any of these Coleman or OZtrail blockout/dark tents have gussets on the windows so you can peg them out and still be protected from rain? Thanks
G'day Kelly,
At this point in time Coleman and Oztrail aren't including gusseted window flaps in their darkroom/blockout tents. If you're needing some airflow in wet weather then the recommendation is to use the floor based vents.
do you sell the "welcome mat" that comes with this separately?
G'day Simon,
Unfortunately not, they're not available separately from Coleman.
just wondering as to how long a 5000 Mah battery pack for example will last in the tent.
G'day Nic,
The power consumption of the lighting in the Coleman Northstar tent series is not one of the specifications provided, however we can probably work off a ball park figure based on the general/average power consumption of LED strip lights from other brands.
First things first, you'll need to make sure your power pack is 5V output minimum. Based on roughly average consumption of 1.2ah per meter, from a 5000mah power pack you could expect to get around 4 solid hours runtime on maximum brightness.
That should see you through a weekend away, but we'd recommend having a larger pack or a couple of the 5000mah ones to cycle through for longer trips.
What wind speed is this tent capable of withstanding?
G'day Valda,
Coleman indicates that these tents can withstand winds up to 100kh/hr, however, based on feedback and realistic usage we don't think this is accurate. We'd recommend making sure you peg out all peg points and guy rope attachments and proceeding with caution in any weather that is forecast as strong winds, or storms.
Hello, I know it says length of the packed tent is 135cm. I'm curious at how accurate that is. Can you tell me if it measures exactly 135cm length packed in real life?
G'day John,
I've just measured the box in real life and it is 138cm long, so yes, the 135cm is the correct length one it has been taken out of the box.
Hi would I be able to fit 2x king goanna stretchers in this tent?
G'day Jonathan,
Yes, you'll be able to fit 2 x King Goanna Stretchers in the Instant Up 6P Lighted Northstar Darkroom Tent.
Hi, What is the procedure for the initial soaking of the tent to seal the seams?
G'day Stuart,
There is no need to season the tent as it is polyester, the soaking to seal the seams is just for canvas products.
I have a Camry Altise sedan. Does the packed tent fit in the boot?
G'day Adil,
Unfortunately, we don't really have a way of measuring the boot of a Camry Atise, however, we do list the packed dimensions of the tent in the Details & Spec section so you'll just need to measure your boot and double-check if there will be enough space.
Packed Dimensions: 135L x 25W x 25H cm
can you put stove jacks on the tent and fly and put a portable wood burning stove inside?
G'day Joshua,
Nope sorry mate, we definitely wouldn't recommend it and Coleman hasn't designed the Northstar Darkroom with this in mind. Cheers
You should not be burning any fuels inside a closed space like this
I'm quite interested in this to replace my 5 year old Coleman instant up 6 person which has held up well but showing signs of wear and tear. !. Does coleman offer spare awning poles, so one could purchase sufficient poles such as to have both front and rear awnings open at once? 2. I get the advantages of the darkroom for early risers and early to bed families, but a travel eye mask also does the trick. What does concern me is that whilst in summer you can have the side windows open to allow light, how is it when you're cooped up inside in rain and overcast, and have the windows and door semi closed to stop rain getting in? Is it ok, or dark and gloomy - in other words is the darkroom tech really only suitable for a summer tent? Many thanks...
G'day John,
Glad to hear you've had an Instant Up 6 and are looking to upgrade. 1. Coleman doesn't sell awning poles separately, however we do sell a whole range of awning poles that will suit if you wanted to have the front and rear awnings up at the same time. We'd suggest having a look at the Supa Peg Bigfoot T-Nut Steel Poles or Aluminium Tent Poles. 2. Inside the tent will be pretty dark even during the day in summer, so in winter if you can't open up the windows it will be fairly dark and gloomy (It'd be worth having a look at the features video between 8.5 and 9.5 mins). If you're not keen on the darkness and are happy with an eye mask for night time, then maybe the Instant Up Gold 6P might be a more suitable option for you.
what size & mesh or tarp
G'day Nadine,
The mesh tarp works well under tents for a number of reasons but mainly it lets the grass breathe! This tent has a footprint of 545x270 so you'd need either a 2.44x6.1m or 3.05x6.10 Oztrail Ultramesh or a C-Gear mat 2.4x6m - which will be slightly smaller than the footprint of the tent
